NIWA has announced its purchase of a $12.7 million dollar supercomputer – the most powerful of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere – for use in environmental forecasting.
The computer, which will also support the Natural Hazards Research Platform, was purchased as as it is felt that accurate environmental forecasting is vital to New Zealand’s research capability as well as its economy, particularly as many of its primary industries including farming, horticulture and tourism, are heavily affected by climate.
