NIWA scientists are predicting that New Zealand could face harmful levels of ozone in the winter months by year 2100.
The problem, which can damage both human an crop health, is already being experienced in the northern hemisphere.

“However, modelling showed that by year 2100, ozone in the lower atmosphere could actually be a problem for New Zealand and for much of the southern hemisphere.
“Atmospheric scientist Dr Guang Zeng said surface ozone was an air pollutant with high levels causing respiratory diseases, and damage to plants and crops, while stratospheric ozone shielded people from harmful UV radiation.”
