Auckland was shaken yesterday afternoon by two earthquakes measuring magnitude 3.1 and 3.9, centred in the Hauraki Gulf about 15 km north-east of Auckland.

Even small scale quakes are rare in the region and geologists have reassured Aucklanders that larger quakes are unlikely.

GNS Science staff did not report any evidence that the quakes were linked to volcanic activity or were large enough to generate a tsunami.

While a record number of people completed online reports on the GeoNet site confirming they felt the quake, there was minimal damage reported.
