The latest Nature Index puts the University of Otago at 303 in a global research ranking of thousands of universities, ahead of the University of Auckland at 386.
The Index, managed by the Nature Publishing Group, ranks countries and institutions on how many articles they published in 68 top journals last year, and also on a more detailed measure, the Weighted Fractional Count (WFC), which takes into account individual authors’ contributions to articles.
As a country, New Zealand ranked 30th in the index, just behind Ireland. The country’s weighted contribution to top journals in 2015 was up on the previous year’s – 13.6 per cent higher.
Otago was the top ranked New Zealand university based on the WFC, although the University of Auckland came first based on the number of articles published.
