We are looking for an experienced journalist / science communicator to join our small, dedicated team working to improve and expand coverage of science-related issues across all types of media in New Zealand.
We work in a fast-paced environment, immersed in a wide range of science research and responding quickly to breaking news stories – be they emerging technologies, natural disasters or the latest on the global pandemic. You’ll need to be able to quickly get your head around a topic and proactively identify angles and contacts that will be useful for New Zealand media.
We also regularly deliver events, training and professional development for researchers and journalists through our acclaimed Science Media Savvy programme and newsroom workshops. You’ll be an enthusiastic public speaker, host and contributor to a dynamic programme of high-quality events.
Skills and experience
You’ll ideally bring good networks of contacts in the New Zealand media and research sectors so you can hit the ground running. Knowledge of Te Ao Māori, Te Reo me ōna Tikanga will be an advantage. Firsthand experience of broadcast and digital media or scientific research would also be a plus. Excellent writing skills are essential.
To succeed in the role, you’ll need to be a self-starter who enjoys building relationships, working collaboratively and who is able to adapt to best support the needs of journalists and scientists we work with. In addition to day-to-day operations, there will be ample opportunities to contribute to longer term strategy and guide the future direction of the centre.
Where appropriate, the position may be offered at a senior level based on the successful applicant’s prior experience. More information is available in the full job description below.
