A New Zealand-US team of scientists have discovered remnants of the Pink Terraces under Lake Rotomahana. The Pink and White Terraces, which disappeared during the 1886 Mount Tarawera eruption, were regarded as the eighth wonder of the natural world.
Project leader Corne de Ronde, of GNS Science, revealed that the discovery had been made only a few days before the project, which made use of underwater robotic vehicles to survey the lake’s floor and map its geothermal system, was due to finish.
The SMC held a media briefing yesterday on the discovery – audio and visuals can be found here.
